Eleanor, by the grace of God queen of Castile, with the cons - Lot 530
Eleanor, by the grace of God queen of Castile, with the consent of her lord king Alfonso, donates the villa of Ordon that is in the terms of Muno, with the pastures, meadows, gardens, waters etc... Done in Burgos, the 13 of the kalends of December 1217 (of the actiacal era = 1179 of Christ), reigning king Alfonso in Toledo, Extremadura, and Castile, in the second year that the serene king Alfonso expelled Cuenca violently. Great rueda of Queen Eleanor, drawn in ink by Martin Gondissalve, mayor of the Queen's house. Confirmation by the archbishop of Toledo and primate of Spain, by four other bishops, three counts and seven other characters. Written in the hand of Egidius, chancellor of the Queen. Initial christening. Parchment sheet (38 with the fold x 30,5 cm). Formerly sealed on a double leather tail. Palacin Galvez, n° 11 Absolutely extraordinary piece, bearing the great rueda of Eleanor, Queen of Castile: Eleanor of England (1162-1214), daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of Alfonso King of Castile (1155-1214); she was the mother of four queens, including Blanche of Castile mother of St. Louis King of France. Only one other document is known from the chancery of Queen Eleanor (in the Chapter House Archives of Toledo). The one we present today is therefore a document of the highest exception. Since its discovery in France in 2017, this document was studied and extensively analyzed and described by José Manuel Cerda Costabal and Félix Martinez Llorente: Un documento inédito y desconocido de la cancilleria de la reine Leonor Plantagenet (En la España Medieval, t. 42, June 2019, pp. 59-91). Note that it was through Eleanor of England that the name Eleanor (or Leonor) entered the family of the kings of the Hispanic peninsula, and then in other families: it was borne by five queens of Aragon, three queens of Castile, two queens of Navarre and four queens of Portugal. It will be worn, in our century, by the probable next queen of Spain, daughter of King Philip VI. estimate on request
