GERMANY - BREMEN Free and Hanseatic City - Lot 448
GERMANY - BREMEN Free and Hanseatic City 20 Gold Mark 1906 J. Hamburg. (7,50 g) Rare. Superb. A Hanseatic city (in German: Hansestadt) is, in Northern Europe, a city which, in the Middle Ages, joined the Hanse merchant league. The ties between these Hanseatic cities were very flexible and not subject to treaties. It is therefore not easy to define which cities belonged to the Hanseatic League at one time or another. The Hanseatic League itself never published a list of the cities that belonged to it. For example, it refused to provide the king of England with a detailed list, if such a nominal list ever existed.
