ROGER MARX Claude. Portrait of Jacob Balgley. Paris Éditions - Lot 67
ROGER MARX Claude. Portrait of Jacob Balgley. Paris Éditions Manuel Bruker 1959, in-folio (33 x 26 cm), 11 uncoded leaves. Edition at 200 numbered copies on Vidalon, one of the first 20 (n°11). Each copy includes a double suite of engravings; that of the book, 6 engravings, and a suite of 5 drypoints and 4 etchings on marsh. To the 20 first copies, another suite of the engravings of the work is joined, which are original engravings. Claude Roger-Marx wrote of BALGLEY: "Balgley did not appear in any salon. To get to know him, you had to cross the impasse de l'Enfant-Jésus. The floor is strewn with tubes of colors, drawings, prints. A stove with alcohol carries a meager meal. The bed disappears as if ashamed, under books that constitute Balgley's most substantial food: Plato, the Bible, Spinoza. [...] What does material life matter? He refuses everything that seems to him to be a concession: to create a contact with the public. He considers himself above glory. He lives out of life, he dies of it." RARE. Good copy.
