HOSTILIA L. Hostilius Saserna 48 BC. Draped bust of Vercingetorix on the right. Behind, shield. R/. L-HOSTILIVS - SASERN. Naked Gaul holding a shield and spear standing on a bige driven by an charioteer. ♦ Babelon (Hostilia) 2; Crawford 448/2a; Sydenham 952 Silver denarius Rome 48 bc (3.84 g). Interesting coinage. Very fine/T.B. L. Hostilius Saserna was Caesar's lieutenant during the Gallic War. The obverse shows a portrait of a Gallic warrior, his hair probably disheveled Vercingetorix and the reverse shows a big horse in which a warrior is throwing a javelin at the enemy. In 52 BC, Caesar captured the famous Gallic leader leader during the siege of Alesia. He brought him back to Rome and kept him prisoner for six years before having him assassinated.
