ARVERNES Clermont-Ferrand 52 BC - Lot 71
ARVERNES Clermont-Ferrand 52 BC Bust draped and diademed on the left. In front, VERCA. R/. Horse at a walk on the right. Above, pearled and pointed ring. ** DT 3608 ; BN 3936 et seq. Bronze in the name of Vercassivellaunos. (1,08 g) Rare. Olive green patina. Very nice. Vercassivellaunos was a Gallic chief of the Arvernes people, cousin of Vercingetorix. His name is composed like that of his famous cousin. The prefix "ver" precedes his Gallic name "Cassivellaunos" which is itself composed of cassi which can refer to the term catu, "the battle" and Vellaunos which means "the commander".
