ITALY - TOSCANY - LUCQUES Republic 1369-1799 - Lot 416
ITALY - TOSCANY - LUCQUES Republic 1369-1799 S. VULTVS. DE. LVCA (coat of arms of Balbani). Crowned bust of Christ. R/. .S. MARTINVS. Saint Martin on his horse cutting off his cloak to give half of it to a beggar suffering from cold. ** Fr 486 Undated gold duchy (1493-1495). (3,52 g) Very rare. Very nice copy. The saint called "Sanctus Vultus" or "Volto Sancto" is not a character but an expression that means "Holy Face". The crucifix, much venerated in Lucca, dates from the eleventh or twelfth century and was probably brought back to Italy miraculously from Judea on a boat without sails or oarsmen. It is displayed in the "tempietto" of the Duomo of Lucca in an octagonal chapel of the Cathedral of San Martino, built by the sculptor and architect Matteo Civitali (1436-1501) of Lucca.
