16th century NUMISMATICS - Lot 454
16th century NUMISMATICS A collection written in Flemish consisting of two pamphlets intended to help 16th century merchant traders and money changers to identify and determine the relative value of circulating coins. It was printed in 1544 or 1551 by Joos Lambrecht. The pages are numbered after the title page (damaged) from 1 to 277. The binding dates from the 19th century. This work is very rare. The interior is in very good condition except for the first 20 pages. In 1931, it was bought for 100 Francs (6 830€) Joos Lambrecht was born around 1491 in Ghent and died in 1556 or 1557 in Wesel in Rhineland. He was a Belgian printer, typographer, lexicographer and linguist (from the Habsburg Netherlands at that time). He is known for his Nederlandsche spellynghe (Dutch Orthography) of 1550. He called himself a "letter-cutter". Practicing in Ghent, he was considered the best printer of his time, promoter of the roman letter. His motto, found on page 87 of this work, was: "Cessent solita dum meliora, Satis quercus" which translates as: "Let's abandon routine, let's make the most of it: "Let us abandon routine, when a new road is open to us."
