Philip III attempted to improve Spain's deteriorating situation. He made peace with England and the Netherlands, but Spain continued to decline. He drove out the Moors in 1609. The same year, Spain signed a twelve-year truce with the United Provinces. In 1610, the assassination of King Henri IV of France led to the accession of the nine-year-old Louis XIII. The regency, entrusted to Queen Mother Marie de Médicis, marked the beginning of a pacifist policy of rapprochement with the House of Habsburg.
