** Boudicca was born around 30 and died in 61. She was queen of the Iceni, a people of Great Britain from the Norfolk region. She was the wife of Prasutagos, a Celtic king who had pledged allegiance to Rome, in the hope of preserving his people's independence. On his death, however, the Romans annexed the entire kingdom and confiscated the royal family's possessions. Boudicca, his widow, was whipped in public, a punishment usually reserved for slaves. Humiliated, she launched an uprising against the Roman occupation. Leading a coalition of Breton tribes, she launched a military campaign in the south of the island. Even today, she is regarded as a popular British heroine. A statue of her on her chariot was erected near Westminster Bridge.
