NORMANDIE Duchy
RICHARD I, also known as Richard the Fearless
december 942 - november 996
Silver denarius with pediment. (1.29 g) ♦ B et ss ; Dy 1 var.
Rare. Very handsome.
Richard is said to have been born on August 28, 933, sent by his father to learn the language of his ancestors from Bothon at his Bayeux estate, and not baptized until after his father's death. He was probably just over ten years old when his father was murdered in December 942, and was given a regency council comprising four senior figures from the Norman duchy: Bernard le Danois, Raoul dit Taisson l'Ancien, Anslech de Bricquebec and Osmond de Conteville. But the Carolingian king Louis d'Outremer, under the pretext of educating him as suzerain, had the teenager transported with one of his regents, Osmond, to his court in Laon. He seems to have stayed there from 943 to 945, eventually escaping with the help of Osmond, who organized his escape with the complicity of Yves de Bellême and Bernard, Count of Senlis and vassal of Hugues le Grand, Duke of the Franks.
