Le Vast factory (Manche) near Cherbourg. Around 1795, Philippe Fontenilliat, an industrialist and merchant from Rouen, set up a cotton mill in Le Vast, benefiting from the water of the Saire river. By 1803, the factory was employing 600 workers and producing 1,500 to 1,600 pounds of spun cotton per day. In 1825, he handed over management to his two sons Édouard and Henri. Production ceased in 1886.
