The Ambians were a Celtic tribe from northern Gaul. Their chief town was Samarobriva (Amiens) and their territory covered the entire lower course of the Somme up to its mouth. They gave their name to the town of Amiens. Gaul-Belgium was one of the four provinces. Gaul-Belgium, along with Gaul-Aquitaine, Gaul-Lyonnaise and Gaul-Narbonnaise, were created by Augustus at the beginning of his principate from the conquests Julius Caesar made in Gaul between 58 and 51/50 BC. Gaul-Belgium comprised more than 18 peoples. The Ambiani's place in history was marked by their involvement in the Gallic War, during which they allied themselves with Julius Caesar.
