The Arvernes were one of the main Celtic peoples of independent Gaul, from the 7th century BC to the Roman conquest. During the Imperial period, they were the inhabitants of a Gallo-Roman city bearing their name (civitas arvenorum), attached to the province of Aquitaine Gaul. In Antiquity, they occupied a territory corresponding to the Auvergne region, which owes its name to them. Their most famous historical figures are the kings Luernos, Bituitos, his son, and Vercingetorix, son of Celtillos, who was one of Julius Caesar's adversaries in the Gallic War.
