Gold statere "au personnage aptère". (7.44 g) Type from the Trésor des Sablons.
Very handsome.
Trésor des Sablons. In 1997, while walking along the banks of the Huisne, a small tributary of the Sarthe, a couple from Mance found a few shiny coins outcropping on the ground. The treasure consisted of 152 alloyed gold staters belonging to three coin series: one series with a crested seahorse, whose traditional attribution to the Venetians has been called into question, and two series with a buckle on the cheek attributed to the Aulerques Cenomans.
Aulerci Cenomani. The Cenomans were a Celtic people who formed part of the Aulerci confederation and inhabited the country that would become eastern Maine. Their capital was Vindinon or Vindinum, today Le Mans. Gold was in abundant supply in the region. They issued staters, a large quantity of which was discovered by chance in the Sablons district of Le Mans.
