Bajocasses. The Baïocasses were an Armorican Celtic people who gave their name to the town of Bayeux (Calvados) and to the Bessin region. The origin of the name is uncertain: it comes from *Badio-cassi or rather *Bodio-cassi. It is based on the Gallic term casse, with no clearly defined etymology, but which is found in the names of other peoples in northern Gaul: Veliocassi (Vexin), Viducassi (Vieux), etc., and perhaps also in the name of the oak tree *cassano- or *cassino-.
