CORIOSOLITES Corseul Saint Brieuc region - Lot 70
CORIOSOLITES Corseul Saint Brieuc region End of the 1st half of the 1st century to the Gallic War Head to right, pointed nose, wavy scrolled hair. R/. Androcephalous horse with pointed nose, surmounted by a simulacrum of a charioteer. Below, a boar with only its head visible. In front, beaded cord terminating in four globules arranged in a diamond shape. ♦ DT 2340; LT 6598 Statère de billon "au nez pointu". Class II. (6.44 g) Brown patina. Off-centered. Very fine. The Coriosolites were part of the Armorican Confederation. This name is also attested in the singular on a Gallo-Roman inscription: Coriosolis "Coriosolite". The Coriosolites lived in the present-day departments of Côtes-d'Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan. Their territory was probably reshaped during the Roman period, with the annexation of the north-western fringe of the Riedones city, and the loss of the southern confines to the Venetes city. They gave their name to the town of Corseul, which was their capital (Gallo-Roman name Fanum Martis), as was Aleth (Aletum, today Saint-Servan).
