Lingones. At the beginning of the 4th century B.C., part of the Lingones population settled in northern Italy, south of the Po delta in what is now the province of Ferrara, where they participated in the formation of Cisalpine Gaul. Like most other Gallic peoples, the Lingons' Latin ethnonym, Lingonenses, was passed on in the present-day toponym of their civitas in transalpine Gaul, the ancient Andemantunnum, renamed Langres, which became one of the most powerful bishoprics in the kingdom of France. Founded later than Langres, their southern metropolis, Divio, became the historic capital of Burgundy: present-day Dijon.
