Celto-Ligurian. The Celtic invasion of Italy took place at the beginning of the 4th century B.C., and is remembered for the victory over the Romans at the Battle of Allia in 387 B.C. and the episode of the Capitoline geese, followed by the famous Vae Victis "Woe betide the vanquished" uttered by the Gallic chieftain Brennus to the vanquished of Rome. Lingons, Senons, Boians and Cenomans established themselves in force in northern Italy. In coalition with the Insubres and Salasses, they formed Cisalpine Gaul. The Cisalpine Celts managed to hold out against Rome at the cost of the battles of Arretium in 284 BC and Lake Vadime in 283 BC.
