Venetes. The Venetians were one of the peoples of Celtic Gaul. In the 1st century B.C., this tribe lived in what is now the Morbihan department, and gave its name to the town of Vannes. Prior to the Roman invasion, they competed commercially and militarily with the Pictons, further south, for control of the mouth of the Loire, one of the tin routes to southern Europe. In the 1st century BC, the Romans gave the Venetians Darioritum, now Vannes, as their new capital.
