DUROTRIGES Brittany Island 60 - 20 Remnant of a human head on the right. R/. Horse left, triangular head, with twelve globules on back. ♦ LT 9507 var.; Mack cf 317; Van Arsdel 1205 var.; Rudd 746 var. Electrum statere (6.17 g) "Chute" type. Oblong blank. Very fine. The Durotriges were one of the Celtic peoples who lived in the south of present-day Britain during protohistory, before the Roman invasion. They are mentioned by Claudius Ptolemy, who calls them Dourotriges. It may be that, rather than a homogeneous people, they were a confederation, since several rulers may have reigned simultaneously. They left their name to Dorset, as well as to the town of Dorchester. They resisted the Roman invasion of the Isle of Britain.
