Muntenia. Muntenia was the name given by Moldavians to the whole of Wallachia in the 14th century. It is the historic European and Romanian region of southern Romania, situated between the Danube to the south and east, the southern Carpathians to the north and the Olt to the west.
After populating a large part of the Carpathian basin, the Celts continued their successive southward advance, entering the Balkans towards the end of the 4th century BC. On their march through the marshes and oak forests of Pannonia, some followed the Danube, while others skirted the western foothills of the Carpathians. In this way, they reached the section of the river between the confluence of the Save - the future Singidunum - and the areas adjacent to the confluence of the Mlava, where the Romans later founded Viminacium. Their silver coinage was inspired by the tetratrachms of Philip II of Macedonia and those of Thasos.
