Exemplaire vente JVN 7 octobre 2003 n°72 Vespasian, Titus, Domitian Vespasian was the last emperor of the Year of the Four Emperors (69) and founder of the Flavian dynasty. With one ally after another joining Vespasian's camp, Vitellius was finally defeated at the second battle of Bedriacum. The three Flavian emperors attempted to restore the economic and military balance of the Empire, which had been weakened by the last Julio-Claudian emperors and by the civil war of 69. Titus was born on December 30, 39 and died on September 13, 81. He was the son of Vespasian, whom he succeeded in 79. His good character augured a great reign. However, his reign was to be one disaster after another! On August 24, 79, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroyed Herculaneum and Pompeii, burying thousands of citizens, including Pliny, a friend of Titus. In 80, Rome was half-destroyed by fire, and the plague wreaked havoc, causing many deaths. His reign was too short to appreciate his worth. His successor Domitian is said to have been responsible for his death.
