He was the 121st emperor of Japan from March 10, 1846 to January 30, 1867. Son and successor of Emperor Ninkō, his personal name was Osahito. He acceded to the throne in year 3 of the Kōka era (1846), but held only symbolic power against the shoguns of the Tokugawa dynasty.
