Louis Charles du Chaffault de Besné was a naval officer in the service of Louis XVI. He retired to the Château de Meslay near Montaigu in the Vendée. He received a pension of 9,000 livres. In 1793, his château was looted and burned. Admiral du Chaffault was 85 when he was arrested and imprisoned in Luzançay, where he died in 1794. Before the start of the Vendée wars, he had decided to hide and bury all his wealth. Two centuries later, one of these treasures has been unearthed.
