This medal commemorates the reunion of Liguria with France and relates to this administrative transformation and the Emperor and King of Italy's passage through the city and department of Genoa. It is the work of one of its most talented engravers, probably using local Mint tools. Hieronymus Gerolamo Vassallo was born in Genoa in 1773, studied at the city's Academy of Fine Arts and later became a pupil of Anton Guillemard at the Milan Mint. In 1797, he joined the Genoa Mint, becoming Chief Engraver in 1800, where he worked until 1808, when he was sent to Milan to assist Luigi Manfredini. He designed the corners of Genoa coins before 1808, as well as numerous medals in Genoa and Milan for France and later for Francis I of Austria, before his death in 1819.
