Birth of Napoleon II on March 20, 1811.
Napoleon II was born Napoleon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte on March 20, 1811 in Paris and died on July 22, 1832 in Vienna. He was the son and heir of Napoleon I, Emperor of the French, and his second wife, Marie Louise of Austria, under the name of King of Rome. In 1814, he was ousted by the Senate following the capture of Paris by the coalition armies and his father's first abdication. In 1815, at the end of the Hundred Days, he was proclaimed successor by his father and the parliamentarians on the latter's second abdication, under the name of Napoleon II. However, both the Assembly and the commission appointed to rule in his name refrained from officially proclaiming the 4-year-old imperial heir in Austria as emperor. Napoleon II's "reign" came to an end after two weeks, when Louis XVIII, supported by the coalition armies, entered Paris. He then bore the title of Prince of Parma, and finally that of Duke of Reichstadt, given to him by his grandfather the Emperor of Austria. His nickname "L'Aiglon" was bestowed posthumously, and was popularized by Edmond Rostand's play L'Aiglon, the title role being created on March 15, 1900 by tragedienne Sarah Bernhardt.
