[CHAULIAC]. JOUBERT (Laurent). La Grande Chirurgie de Guy de - Lot 15
[CHAULIAC]. JOUBERT (Laurent). La Grande Chirurgie de Guy de Chauliac composée l'an de gloire 1363, restituée par Laurent Joubert. Tournon, by Claude Michel, 1598. In-8, 32-713. Woodcut portrait of Joubert on verso of title. New edition of this remarkable work, first published in 1579; translation and annotations by Laurent Joubert. The Grande chirurgie by Guy de Chauliac (1298-1368), adapted from Inventorium sive Collectorium artis chirurgicalis medicinae (a work by the same author published in 1340), is a compilation of Greek and Arabic authors, the masters of Salerno and the surgeons of Bologna. It was also called Guydon (a popular allusion to Guy's first name, Guido in Italian). In it, Chauliac proposes the Bolognese model of the bipartition of medicine into theorica and practica, and places the study of anatomy as the theoretical foundation of the surgical act. This book is undoubtedly the greatest medieval work on the subject, and Chauliac is today considered the father of modern surgery. La grande chirurgie remained the standard text throughout the 17th century. Laurent Joubert (1529-1583) was the first to translate Chauliac into French and to annotate it. Suivi des Annotations de M. Laurent Joubert sur toute la Chirurgie de M Guy de Chauliac. A Tournon, Claude Michel Imprimeur de l'Université, 1598. With reverse engraving by Claude Joubert. 1-32 then Annotations 1-291. Followed by Interprétation des Langues de M Guy de Chauliac avec les figures des instruments chirurgicaux... In a 17th-century period binding, with title inscribed in ink on the spine and date 1635. First board detached, some bending to corners of some pages, rodent holes on some pages otherwise good condition.
