Jacques Gustave HAMELIN (1809-1895). - Lot 216
Jacques Gustave HAMELIN (1809-1895). The reading lesson. Oil on canvas, signed lower left. 27 x 21.5 cm. In a 19th century wood and gilded stucco frame with canals, pearls and foliage (small missing parts). After attending Ingres' studio, Gustave Hamelin returned to Honfleur, where he set up a studio and opened a drawing class. An excellent portraitist, some of his work can be seen in the Musée Eugène-Boudin. A close friend of Eugène Boudin, who never spared him his admiration. Letter from Eugène Boudin to M. Soudan de Pierrefitte, dated October 25, 1896 (quoted in Gustave Cahen, "Eugène Boudin, sa vie et son œuvre", Paris, H. Floury éditeur, 1900, pp.66-67): "You are right, it is very possible to create a small "Musée des peintres Honfleurais". First of all, we should look for some paintings by Hamelin, whom you don't seem to esteem, nor put in the rank he deserves... He's the first of us all. He left some marvellous paintings, especially portraits... I have two of them. If you get us a room of Honfleur painters, these two Hamelin canvases will be the pearls. It would be possible for someone as dedicated as you to find a certain number of portraits in Honfleur, because Hamelin did a lot of portraits, and I'm sure that few people in Honfleur understand the merit of them... He also did some admirable drawings, comparable to those of Ingres, his master! And what a fine artist he was!
