Only five bishops of Meaux are known: Gauthier (1045-1102), Bouchard (1120-1134), Renaud (1158-1161), Étienne (1161 - 1171) and *Pierre (1172 - 1174). Pierre, often called Pierre de Saint-Chrysogone, was a 12th-century cardinal and papal legate for France and Normandy. He studied in Paris and became a doctor of theology. He then served as archdeacon of the diocese of Meaux, before being elected bishop of Meaux around 1172. His reputation for great learning led Pope Alexander III to appoint him a cardinal with the title of Saint Chrysogonus at the consistory of September 1173.
