*Philippe IV le Bel was the son of Philippe III le Hardi and Isabelle d'Aragon, grandson of Saint Louis and the 11th direct Capetian king. His reign was marked by war. After ending the war against the King of Aragon, which lasted 9 years, he had to fight the King of England, Edward I. First campaign in Aquitaine 1294 - 1296, then second war in rebellious Flanders 1300 - 1304, ending with a bloody defeat at Courtrai in 1302. The Treaty of Athis Mons brought peace.
