*Charles VI le Fol, also known as le Bien Aimé, was born on December 3, 1368, in the Hôtel Saint Pol, the royal residence to the east of Philippe Auguste's enceinte. He was only twelve when he succeeded his father Charles V in 1380, becoming the 4th king of the Valois branch. After the regency of his uncles, the Dukes of Burgundy, Anjou, Berry and Bourbon, he decided to emancipate himself in 1388 at the age of 20. He reigned for 42 years. His reign saw the introduction of the secret dot and letters on coins to identify the place of minting.
