LOUIS XIV 1643 - 1715 - Lot 114
LOUIS XIV 1643 - 1715 Cuirassed bust of the king on the right. Trademark of Jean Jacques Bararly. R/. Round crowned shield surmounted by a fleur-de-lys scepter and a hand of justice. Heart, mark of G. Le Choisne. ♦ Dy 1533; Gad 220 Silver shield with insignia 1702 Rennes (26.90 g). Wide flan. Reformation* on a shield with palms. T.B. *Reformations. Under the reign of Louis XIV, which lasted 72 years, "reformations" appeared. A reformation is the minting of a new type of coin on a blank of an earlier type, in order to save the cost of recasting the old types. Between 1690 and 1723, there were six reformations: four reformed types under Louis XIV and two under Louis XV. A sign such as star, crescent, trefoil, shell or rosette is used to identify each reformation on coins struck with reformed types.
