RAYMOND CAZANAVE. [marine drawing]. - Lot 143
RAYMOND CAZANAVE. [marine drawing]. Remarkable set of 10 original plates in black accompanied by their period tracing with coloring by the author, for an adventure published in Pierrot in 1941 entitled "Le beau voyage d'Henry". Set of 10 plates, 25 cm x 32.6 cm, on "SAV" vellum drawing paper (two in reduced width square format). All signed, with Pierrot editor's stamp on front or back, and dates (March 1941 for all, with day variations). All represent part of the illustrations for a story that appeared in the youth weekly "Pierrot" during the Second World War. It's a beautiful story set in the late 17th century, under Louis XIV, and featuring privateers and freebooters, with in particular a beautiful naval combat scene, and another of the ceremony of crossing the line, or crossing the Equator with "King Neptune". condition: good / very good general condition. Some foxing and marginal creasing, but very well preserved. Two plates are missing in the margins, but can be trimmed as they are in the margins. Bibliographical note: Cazanave is one of the best French comic artists (and illustrators) of the Golden Age period, along with Marijac, Le Rallic and Calvo. This series is quite exceptional for the presence of period coloring, which is truly rare for this period.
