Unusual representation of the aegis complete with Medusa's head, which was placed on either Athena's breastplate or shield. Medusa's head, after her beheading by Perseus, is often used as a symbol of protection against evil and envious glances, and also represents fear, death, transformation and rebirth. It embodies power, destruction and victory over evil.
