WEDDING - Lot 501
WEDDING Silver case engraved on the lid with ILS SONT VNIS under two flaming hearts and a rose on the bottom. It is composed of thirteen silver coins with traces of gilding: worn 1/20th ecu of Louis XV (laurel and headband types). Silver treizain containing 13 vermeil coins (25.38 g) T.B. Since the Middle Ages, wedding ceremonies have been accompanied by the presentation of a small case containing thirteen coins (deniers or bracteates), known as the "treizain". This is a set of thirteen denarii, the religious symbol of the Last Supper: Jesus Christ and the 12 apostles. The "treizain" blessed by the priest symbolized the bride and groom's entry into a community of goods. The priest deducted one denarius for the church, and gave the remaining twelve denarii to the bride... The treizain became a douzain! From the 16th century onwards, spouses used two types of monetary objects for the treizain. The most common was the re-use of existing coins, sometimes gilded or silvered.
