MALTA - EMMANUEL PINTO da FONSECA - Lot 442
MALTA - EMMANUEL PINTO da FONSECA 68th Grand Master of the Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem January 18, 1741 - January 24, 1773 Saint John standing holding a banner. At his feet, a lamb. R/. Crowned coat of arms. ♦ Fr 36 10 Scudi d'or 1762 La Valette (7.82 g) T.B. Emmanuel Pinto da Fonseca. Several events marked his long magistracy: * The Bacha plot in 1749, a conspiracy by the island's Muslim slaves to kill the Grand Master and seize power on behalf of the Ottoman Empire. * The affair of the Ottoman Crown, a Turkish flagship captured by its Christian slaves after a mutiny and offered to the Order. It was at the center of a diplomatic crisis between the Porte, France and the Order. The affair is resolved when France buys the ship back from the Order, leading to France's increasingly restrictive tutelage of the Order's foreign policy. * The affair of the night captain, which highlights not only the decline of the Hospitallers' power, but also the emergence of a Maltese national feeling in the face of the Order's domination, increasingly resented by the population.
