ROGER MARX (Claude). Portrait of Jacob Balgley. Paris Éditio - Lot 68
ROGER MARX (Claude). Portrait of Jacob Balgley. Paris Éditions Manuel Bruker 1959, in-folio (33 x 26 cm), 11 uncoded leaves. Edition of 200 numbered copies on Vidalon, one of the first 20 (n°11). Each copy includes a double suite of etchings: the book's suite of 6 etchings, and a suite of 5 drypoints and 4 etchings on marsh. The top 20 copies include another suite of original engravings from the book. Claude Roger-Marx wrote of BALGLEY: "Balgley did not appear in any salons. To get to know him, you had to cross the impasse de l'Enfant-Jésus. The floor is littered with tubes of color, drawings and prints. An alcohol stove holds a meagre meal. The bed disappears as if ashamed, beneath books that constitute Balgley's most substantial nourishment: Plato, the Bible, Spinoza. [...] What does material life matter? He refuses anything that seems to him a concession: making contact with the public. He considers himself above glory. He lives out of life, he dies of it." RARE. A good copy.
