NAPOLEON III - FRANCE / SWITZERLAND POST. TENEBRAS. LUX. Coat of arms surmounted by a sun inscribed IHS. R/. INAUGURATION OF THE RAILWAY FROM LYON TO GENEVA. Locomotive adorned with a trophy composed of flags, winged caduceus and various coats of arms. In the exergue, MARCH 16, 1858 and below, A. BOVY. Smooth edges. Silver medal by Antoine Bovy 1858 Geneva. (54.21 g) Ø 48.27 mm Inauguration of the railway from Lyon to Geneva on March 16, 1858. Rare in silver. Superb. The railway line between Lyon and Geneva via Ambérieu, Culoz and Bellegarde is one of the oldest rail links in the region. It reached Geneva in March 1858, a few months before the one linking Geneva to Lausanne in June 1858. The obverse is similar to the 10 Franc silver coin of the Canton of Geneva minted in 1851, also by Antoine Bovy (see no. 375 in this catalog).
